Indiana WIC is doing a great job bringing topic experts to our community to provide vital education, and this time is no different.

Indiana WIC is excited to announce the Baby Behavior 101 training by Jane Heinig, Phd, IBCLC, on Thursday, April 23, 2012, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:0o p.m.  This training is worth every penny of the modest $90 registration fee.

can’t get enough skin to skin!

All the excitement around skin to skin care after birth is not without reason: it works and has benefits for both mom and baby!

Does your hospital or facility want to promote skin to skin care, but aren’t sure where to start?  We’ve got you covered.  Thanks to our amazing Clinical Workgroup, below is a list of resources we would like to share.  These are simple tasks that can be implemented with ease at your hospital.

1)  Promote it!  Check out this simple, yet beautiful poster that was made to get patients and others to inquire about skin to skin care.  Progress and change begins with discussion and raising awareness, and this poster does a great job of accomplishing that.

2)  Promote it again!  Do you see a pattern?  This newsletter was developed to distribute to staff and patients to pass along information about the benefits of skin to skin care.

3)  Make a clear, concise procedure…and communicate it!  With the complexity of patient care these days, it’s necessary to make sure expectations are clearly outlined in procedure statements for nurses and other caregivers.  This skin to skin procedure outlines the process in which skin to skin care is to be implemented in a hospital setting.

4)  Follow up and provide feedback!  This skin to skin quality assurance checklist can be used to make sure the procedure is clear and to serve as a double check to make sure skin to skin care is implemented correctly.  Always remember to follow up and provide feedback to nurses and caregivers…and expect the same in return.

ISBC is proud to announce that Indianapolis will be the first Super Bowl city EVER to have on-site lactation accommodations for breastfeeding and lactating moms.  With the thousands of families that are coming to Indy between now and the big game, the NFL-approved lactation space in the MESH Super Care Clinic will not only provide a clean, comfortable place for breastfeeding moms, but also show the nation and world how importantly we value breastfeeding support here in the Crossroads of America!

We have to give a HUGE shout out to Indiana Perinatal Network, who was instrumental in securing the space in collaboration with MESH.  The room is equipped with chairs, a hospital-grade Medela pump and individual-user kits, informational materials, a TV, and activities for siblings.  Conveniently located in Union Station at 300 S. Meridian Street, the Super Care Clinic will be open during peak periods from January 27 through February 5, 2012, with 24-hour coverage during Super Bowl weekend. Visitors and fans can contact the Super Care Clinic by phone at (317) 636-CARE (2273).

Indiana WIC Offers IBCLC Cram Course!

ISBC is excited to announce that the Indiana WIC program will be providing the skilled staff of Lactation Education Consultants!  This course is offered for anyone in the state of Indiana is is ONLY $90.  Whether looking to update your knowledge, obtain CERPs or review for the IBLCE exam, this single authoritative course is for you!  Covering the entire IBLCE exam grid, this course will bring you up-to-date on the newest information and research in lactation.  Click the image below for a copy of the flyer.

ISBC pick-a-project

ISBC’s main goal is to connect local coalitions throughout the state by providing resources and information.  Think of us as the clearinghouse of information for coalitions and breastfeeding advocates throughout Indiana.  Our first project is the ISBC pick-a-project program.  We know you are doing AMAZING things in your communities to promote breastfeeding and infant health.  We would like to use indianastands.org to display and highlight your great work, and provide ideas to other coalitions who may need that extra push in executing a community event.  ISBC will soon be sending out a short survey to all of the coalition leaders.  We hope you will complete this survey with one or two of the projects or programs you have successfully implemented in your community.  These projects will be listed in the pick-a-project directory for other coalitions to use as an example.

Each month, ISBC will select a project to highlight and that coalition will receive a special prize!  You will also be featured on the site as that month’s pick-a-project success story!  If you would like to receive this email directly, please fill out the form below and we’ll add you to the distribution list!

We think this internet thing is here to stay, so the Indiana State Breastfeeding Coalition is joining the 21st century and developing a website!

The indianastands.org domain will host the official website of the ISBC with our goal of promoting, supporting, and protecting breastfeeding throughout Indiana and beyond.

Indiana Stands for Breastfeeding Collaboration – our goal is to use this website to provide resources, information, and support for breastfeeding advocates, health care providers, community & business leaders and, most importantly, breastfeeding mothers and families in our local communities throughout the state.
